Winner

Jenna Barrett is a portrait photographer based in Houston, Texas. She gets her inspiration from the beauty she sees in the world around her, and she means to capture it with every shot she takes. Her greatest love is to create unique images that convey the gorgeous individualism of the people she photographs. She involves herself in every step of the process of creating her beautiful portraits, including designing costumes, scouting locations, building props, and even makeup and hair. We connected with her to ask about how she uses Exposure.

How did Exposure help create your winning shot?

For this image, I started editing by applying the Color Photo – Fading preset. I liked how it enhanced the yellows and warmer tones in the flowers and the model, and it brightened up the photo overall. I lowered the highlights, and I gently increased the red and cyan saturation controls to accent the hair, lips, and sky. The model was backlit, and I shot without a modifier, so there were a lot of shadows on her face. I used the brush set to dodge to remove them.

Additionally, there was also a strong yellow cast on the skin that needed correcting. I discovered that the Whitening Teeth brush preset works great to fix this! As finishing touches, I added a little warmth to her hair and I used the Enhance Iris brush to brighten the eyes. Then it was perfect!

I use Exposure in my workflow for pretty much every photograph. I love the control it gives me over the colors, contrast, shadows, and highlights and I love the convenience of being able to create and save my own presets so easily. This is great for me because I don’t have to remember each step I took to create a look. Once I save a preset, it is ready to go for when I edit that particular set of photos.

Runners-up

All the artists listed below win a copy of our advanced, non-destructive RAW photo editor Exposure X3. Terrific work, everyone!

Introducing the Exposure X3 Complete Workflow Update. Powerful new features enhance your creativity and make Exposure able to handle additional steps in your workflow.

I’m excited to announce that a substantial new update to Exposure X3 is here. The Exposure X3 Complete Workflow Update is the latest version of our award-winning creative photo editor, which greatly enhances your ability to create beautiful images and master your workflow. This update is free to anyone who already owns Exposure X3.

If you own Exposure X3, open the Help menu and choose Check for Updates. Exposure will then provide you with a link to the correct update installer.

Here are the new features and enhancements:

Greater Control over Color and White Balance

New HSL tools enable you to adjust the hue, luminance, and saturation for each color. In addition, you can easily target specific colors in your image for detailed adjustments using Exposure’s new targeted adjustment tool.

If you’re editing RAW images that record white balance data, you can now specify precise Kelvin values to correct for lighting conditions and unwanted color casts. New white balance presets give you a quick way to set the Kelvin temperature for a specific type of light.

Printing

You can now print your photos directly from Exposure. Apply watermarks, print a grid of images as a contact sheet, and apply sharpening appropriate for your paper selection. Additional settings and an image preview window make it easy to adjust your print parameters exactly as you want them.

Collections and Keywords

When you copy photos from a card, they are now automatically added to a Last Copy from Card collection. Further, you can add images to a collection you choose when copying from a card. You also have more flexibility when working with keywords — you can more easily remove them from your image, add and remove them from a keyword set, and import keyword sets from other photo editors such as Lightroom.

Watermarks

Any of your image metadata can now be applied as a watermark. If you choose capture time as your watermark, you can set your own custom format. It’s also now easier to place your watermark precisely in your image thanks to new keyboard shortcuts.

Exposure’s Export menu now displays a visual preview of how your watermark looks on your image.

Side-by-Side View

In response to customers who wanted to view even more images on-screen in side-by-side view, you can now view up to six images at once. We’ve also made it easier to see which presets you’ve selected when in Audition Preset mode.

And More

You can now make backup copies of your images directly from Exposure’s Copy from Card window. Exposure now supports a greater number of Canon, Fujifilm, and Sony cameras and lenses. The update also adds 15 new presets that mimic the in-camera film simulations in Fujifilm cameras.

Exposure Bundle Updates

We’ve also updated the Exposure Bundle to include the Exposure X3 Complete Workflow Update as its central app. The bundle integrates all of our award-winning photo apps: Exposure, Snap Art, and Blow Up.

The Fastest Way to Bring Your Vision to Life

Exposure is the creative photo editor that enables you to quickly bring your creative vision to life. Its creative tools and fast, intuitive approach increase the creativity of your post-processing workflow. Plug-in support is included, so you can use Exposure’s advanced editing tools in Photoshop or Lightroom.

If you haven’t tried Exposure before, you can download a free, fully-functional 30-day trial.

Winner

Mark Wild is a wedding photographer based in Glasgow, Scotland. Mark picked up a camera a few years ago. Since then, he’s never put it down. He is fascinated by how photos can create emotions in people. So he throws himself wholeheartedly into learning all he can about it. We connected with Mark to ask him about how he uses Exposure.

How did Exposure help create your winning shot?

I always take my work through Exposure. And I’ve done that for quite a while now. I want to use it as a standalone app, but I have always used it for finishing touches.

I prefer Exposure’s grain to Lightroom’s. A favourite thing of mine to do with Exposure is to add a preset (usually Kodak Gold or Portra) layer on top of the already edited file and then dial the opacity down. This is what I did with the winning shot using Portra 160 at 50% opacity. I used to do that in Photoshop, but now I can do it all from within Exposure. It adds a depth that’s hard to achieve with just Lightroom sliders! I always do my sharpening in Exposure, too! Always.

Runners-up

All the artists listed below win a copy of our advanced, non-destructive RAW photo editor Exposure X3. Great work, everyone!

Here is the winning shot for our Bokeh Sparkles photo contest. Congratulations to Jan Heastont for her winning entry!

You can participate in our next monthly photo contest by posting your work using the contest hashtags on Instagram and Facebook. This contest specifically celebrated the beautiful out-of-focus sparkles of light and color that appear in photos.

Winner

Jan Heastont is a passionate hobbyist photographer based in Southern Ontario, Canada. Her love of photography started at an early age. She was inspired by the work of photographers in her family, and she dreamt of taking her own photos some day. Now she captures, edits, prints, mats, and frames her own photography work. We connected with Jan to ask her about how she uses Exposure.

How did Exposure help you in creating your winning shot?

I use Exposure on almost every photo I edit. In my winning macro shot, the edit was really simple. I didn’t do much to it aside from adding a vignette and reducing the saturation of the cyans. After that, I tweaked the tone curve to crush the blacks.

Runners-Up

There were lots of great photos shared in the contest. We chose the grand prize winner and three runners-up winners from all the entries. Each of the photographers featured in this article will get a copy of Exposure X3, and the grand prize winner will be featured in our social media headers.

This month’s contest theme is Bokeh Sparkles. It focuses on one of Exposure’s awesome creative features: bokeh. Simply put, bokeh is the aesthetic quality of how a lens renders the out-of-focus parts of an image. You can use Exposure’s bokeh controls to apply realistic-looking lens blur simulations to your photos. Gorgeous sparkles of light and color are especially enhanced by bokeh, so keep those in mind for your entries. You can learn more about using Exposure’s bokeh controls in our tutorial video.

Here’s how to enter:

 1. Follow @alienskinsoftware on Instagram or Facebook
 2. Post a photo to Instagram or Facebook featuring this month’s theme. The shared photo must have been edited with Exposure X3. If you don’t own Exposure X3, you can use the free trial version.

We’ll pick a grand prize winner and three runner up winners from the entries. Every winner will get a copy of Exposure X3, and the grand prize winner will be featured in our social media headers.

With the uncertainty surrounding Lightroom, now is a good time to reiterate the core elements of Exposure that make it a smarter solution for editing and organizing your photos.

No Subscription Needed

Exposure has never been subscription-based, and we have no plans to make it so. Once you purchase Exposure, you own it forever.

This avoids the risks of losing access to the program, and of spending more money than you expected due to monthly subscription costs increasing. Nor will you need to rely on tiered storage plans that can further increase costs.

The Flexibility to Work The Way You Want

Flexibility is one of Exposure’s core design principles. It works with any type of cloud storage, so you aren’t forced into using any one provider.

It also works well with ‘private cloud’ solutions like Drobo and Synology. Access your photos everywhere without paying a subscription fee.

Exposure supports external editors like Photoshop. You can easily send your edited images to and from other applications for additional edits.

Flexible options like side-by-side view and preset audition enable you to work with presets much faster than in Lightroom and other photo editors.

Exposure’s customizable UI enables you to specify which tools are visible, allowing you to focus on your editing without distractions. You can make Exposure’s interface as minimal as you like. Even if you’re viewing all of the tools, you’ll still benefit from having everything you need onscreen in a single interface.

A Clear Path Forward

There are no confusing multiple variants of Exposure to try to figure out. You can purchase it on its own or as the central app in the Exposure Bundle, alongside Snap Art and Blow Up. Either way, it’s the same RAW photo editor.

We are constantly updating Exposure, and we use your feedback to help guide its evolution. Many of the most substantial new features in Exposure X3 are those that our customers asked us to include.

Software That’s Easy to Use

Unlike Lightroom and other RAW photo editors, there are no user modules that force you to switch modes in order to perform different tasks. Every command is available all the time.

Exposure’s catalog-free approach lets you avoid the hassles of slow imports and complicated catalogs. You can start working immediately after beginning to copy your images.

There’s no single point of failure with your edits, and no unnecessary hard drive space is used to store large catalogs.

Exposure makes it easy for you to back up, transfer, and sync your images and edits. You can edit from multiple computers and even collaborate on edits with others using cloud storage.

Exposure’s learning curve is considerably easier than those of catalog-based RAW photo editors — the folder structure in Exposure is exactly like the folder structure on your computer.

Unmatched Creativity, Speed, and Stability

Exposure provides the kind of speed that traditional RAW photo editors cannot match. Large images load quickly, and all of the tools behave responsively.

Exposure’s hundreds of creative presets include tasteful, accurate film emulations that provide gorgeous looks in a single click.

We’ve been developing Exposure for 12 years now, and have grown it into a complete RAW photo editor and organizer, built on industry-leading creative tools and a powerful processing engine. Additionally, we’ve been creating award-winning creative imaging software for 25 years, and are a veteran team that knows how to ship stable software that lives up to our marketing claims. So you avoid the pain points that photographers have encountered with other software releases that have been released with missing or unstable features.

Organize Your Collection and Finish Your Images in a Single App

Exposure X3 handles your entire photography workflow, so there’s no need to cobble together multiple apps to finish your photos.

You have all the retouching tools, creative edits, and special effects that you need. These include tools like layering, spot healing, brushing, gradients, and gorgeous special effects (grain, vignette, and bokeh).

Exposure’s 500+ presets include accurate, tasteful film simulations. You’ve got the history of film at your fingertips. You can layer, blend, and customize each preset to your heart’s content, and then save the finished look as your own new custom preset.

Exposure gives you the organizing tools you need to master your workflow. These include the following:

 • Collections and quick collections to quickly group your images, no matter where they appear on your computer
 • Keywords and keyword sets to apply helpful descriptive tags that make it easy for you and for your clients to locate your photos
 • Stars, flags, and color labels that give you all the filtering tools you need to cull your images
 • Side-by-side views for flexible viewing options to speed up your image culling and preset selections
 • Watermarks that enable you to mix text and images, and use copyright metadata
 • Flexible exporting and copying options that include keywords, metadata, and quick exports of multiple image recipes
 • Extensive shortcut keys and workflow presets to further speed up your work

Exposure has the features that you’d expect from a non-destructive RAW photo editor, including:

 • An entirely non-destructive workflow — your original file is never touched
 • RAW, JPEG, TIFF, DNG, and PSD support
 • Adjustable histogram
 • Extensive color adjustments
 • Support for a wide variety of DSLR and mirrorless cameras
 • Automatic lens correction for many popular lenses

The post Introducing Exposure X3, The Latest Version of Our Advanced RAW Photo Editor appeared first on Alien Skin Software.

]]>

I’m excited to announce that Exposure X3 is now available! It’s the latest version of Exposure, our award-winning creative photo editor, and includes new features that greatly enhance your ability to create beautiful images and master your workflow.

Here are some of them:

Powerful New Organizing Tools

Keyword support enables you to add descriptive tags to your photos, so you can easily organize your images around themes, and quickly find them on your computer.

Collections help you quickly and easily group your images, no matter where they appear on your computer. Create collections of favorite photos, organize projects spanning multiple photo shoots, or group images for export. Use the quick collection feature to quickly organize images for short-term projects, such as photo contests or for blog articles.

Virtual copies encourage your creativity by enabling you to edit multiple variations of a single photo, without taking up additional disk space.

Creative New Editing Tools

The side-by-side view enables you to compare multiple images, or to compare the same image using multiple presets. It’s a great way to narrow down your selections, find the best preset, and edit multiple virtual copies to experiment with different looks.

Exposure’s basic editing tools are now even more powerful:

 • Blacks and Whites sliders give you greater control over the tonal range of your photos
 • Orange and Purple saturation sliders give you greater control over the color adjustments

The enhanced Overlays panel gives you more creative control when applying light effects, borders, and texture overlays to your photo.

 • Import multiple custom overlays simultaneously
 • New overlay blend modes enable a greater variety of looks

Exposure’s new linear and radial tools make it easy to achieve a seamless, natural fade between multiple effects. These work great for adjusting skies in landscape images or faces in portraits. Exposure X3 includes six new presets that make use of this new capability

And More

 • Flexible watermarking when exporting, so you can put your own stamp on your images
 • Numerous speed enhancements that help you cruise through your work
 • Enhanced preset copy and paste for greater creative control
 • Enhanced vignette positioning shows you where the center of your vignette is
 • Additional camera and lens support

Exposure Bundle Updates

We’ve also updated the Exposure Bundle to include Exposure X3 as its central app. The bundle integrates all of our award-winning photo apps: Exposure, Snap Art, and Blow Up.

The Fastest Way to Bring Your Vision to Life

You’ll experience the benefits of using an award-winning, advanced non-destructive creative photo editor that is the fastest way to bring your vision to life. Plug-in support is included, so you can use Exposure’s advanced creative editing tools in Photoshop or Lightroom.

Pricing

Exposure X3 is available now for $149. Upgrade pricing is available to owners of previous versions of Exposure for $99. The Exposure X3 Bundle is available for $199. Owners of one or more of the current apps in the Exposure X3 Bundle can purchase for $119.

We are very happy to announce the upcoming release of Exposure X3. It’s the latest version of our award-winning non-destructive RAW photo editor and organizer, and it includes a ton of helpful new features. You can view the Exposure X3 intro video above.

New Organizing and Creative Features

Side-by-side Comparison View

There’s a new side-by-side view that enables you to view multiple images. You can use this in several helpful ways. Together with Exposure’s new preset audition mode, you can now easily audition multiple presets, seeing them onscreen simultaneously. Or you can use side-by-side to speed up your image culling by comparing similar images to find the very best one.

Virtual Copies

You can even use side-by-side view when working with virtual copies, another cool new feature. Virtual copies enable you to create multiple variations of a single photo, without taking up additional disk space. This works great for experimenting with different creative looks. For you multi-taskers out there, you can work with two or three virtual edits on screen, and export one or all of them if you choose.

Linear and Radial Gradients for Local Adjustments

There are new linear and radial gradient tools for achieving a natural, seamless fade between two or more effects.

New Overlays, Blend Modes, and Toning Enhancements

New adjustable borders include grunge and wet plate looks. Additionally, there are new blend modes available for all overlays. New color and B&W toning enhancements give you greater control over your image adjustments.

Keywords and Collections

Master your workflow with new organizing tools like keywords and collections. Use keywords to add descriptive metadata to your photos, making it easy to organize photos around themes and to create keyword sets. Use collections and quick collections to flexibly group your images, no matter where they appear on your computer.

Sue Bryce Exposure X3 Demo

Master photographer and educator Sue Bryce is a longtime user of Exposure, and edits all of her work with it. She recently demoed Exposure X3 at The Sue Bryce Education Portrait Master’s Conference, a 3-day conference of master portrait photographers.

“Exposure is every action I’ve ever wanted, all in one software product. It helps me bring a painterly, Old Masters-feel to my images with one click of a button,” she said.

Pricing and Release

We’re excited to bring Exposure X3 to you later this fall, so stay tuned!

Exposure X3 is $149. If you already own Exposure, you can buy Exposure X3 for a special upgrade price of $99. If you buy Exposure X2 on or after September 1st, we’ll send you Exposure X3 as a free update!

December’s Photo of the Month Winner https://www.alienskin.com/blog/2017/decembers-photo-of-the-month-winner/ https://www.alienskin.com/blog/2017/decembers-photo-of-the-month-winner/#comments Tue, 10 Jan 2017 15:24:22 +0000 http://www.alienskin.com/?p=21711 Suzy Hanzlik won our last monthly photo contest for 2016. Learn about her and see some runner-up images from December.

The post December’s Photo of the Month Winner appeared first on Alien Skin Software.

]]>

Here is the winning photo for Alien Skin’s December Photo of the Month contest. The photo-sharing theme was memories. Congratulations to Suzy Hanzlik!

Judge

Patrick Shipstad is a professional photographer based in Los Angeles, with a background in music composition, sound design and video production. His photography work emphasizes creative portrait, beauty, fashion, and he’s done a great deal of product and family photography. He recently shared an article on our blog about shooting and editing a fun project of a magical scene. We’re grateful that he joined us this month for our contest.

Winner

About the winning shot, Patrick said, “As usual, all the entries I saw from last month have something special about them and they were all beautifully captured so this was a tough one to choose. Focusing on the theme “Memories,” there was one shot that stood out and really embodied the theme. The sparse composition, the girl standing in the road in the dense fog of Suzy Hanzlik’s entry, conjured up a dream-like mood of missing someone. I really liked the scene setting because it allows an open-ended interpretation for the viewer to imagine their own story. Bravo!”

We connected with fine art senior portrait and children photographer Suzy Hanzlik from Douglasville, GA. Learn a little more about her, below.

How did you get into Photography?

I’ve been a photographer for 15 years. I fell completely in love with photography just after my first daughter was born. She just turned 23.

Other than your camera, what is your favorite photography accessory?

My absolute favorite accessory is my 70-200mm F2.8. It’s a joy to shoot with and it produces lots of things I like to see in my photos, such as crisp image sharpness, and surreal bokeh.

Do you work with an assistant? Why?

I try to work with an assistant as often as I can. Most often, it’s my 18 year old daughter Isabelle. For most of my sessions, when she’s not in school, she accompanies me to the shoot. She’s a great help to me by offering another set of hands, and her presence helps put people at ease. She’s amazing with hair and makeup too, which comes in really handy.

How has Alien Skin’s software changed how you process your photos?

Exposure has completely changed my workflow in terms of speed. With it, color toning is lightning fast. I love using it. My favorite controls on the bokeh and vignette panels are extremely powerful. It’s an amazing and powerful finishing product.

Thanks for sharing, Suzy! Learn more about her on her website, or follow her on Facebook and Instagram.

Runner Ups

There were many spectacular images shared last month, some of them are listed below in this article. Thanks and congratulations to everyone who submitted. These are amazing!

Prizes

Photo of the Month award winners receive super soft tri-blend t-shirts featuring the Alien Skin logo and a laser-engraved 16GB thumb drive loaded with all our photography software.

Monthly Theme

The monthly photo-sharing theme for January is natural light. It’s something that we’re not experiencing as much as we like right now in the northern hemisphere, so let’s celebrate what we have to work with. If you’d like to enter the contest this month, get your best work for this topic posted before the end of January.
Stay connected with all of the happenings in the contest in the Exposure and Snap Art users groups on Facebook. The announcement posts are pinned at the top of the groups on or around the first day of each month. Along with friendly reminders of the group’s posting rules, which I encourage everyone to take a look at.

An update to Exposure is now available. Exposure X2.2 now offers additional Photoshop integration. You can now export your images as a PSD file. You can choose 8 or 16 bits per component and select from sRGB, AdobeRGB, ProPhoto RGB, or your original color space.

When you choose to edit a copy of your image in Photoshop, Exposure chooses PSD as the default file type.

Note that when Exposure writes a PSD to Photoshop, it merges multiple layers that you have created in Exposure in order to create the PSD document.

This update is free for everyone who owns Exposure X2. You can download it on our updates page.

It’s time for our annual survey, in which we give you a chance to tell us the features you’d like to see in future releases of Exposure!

Each year we send out a brief survey to better understand:

 • Your editing needs and photography background
 • The features you’d most like to see in future versions of Exposure

For the new Exposure X2, we added features like spot healing, PSD support, new faded looks, and the History panel in response to user requests, so it’s definitely worth taking three or four minutes to give us your feedback on what you’d like to see!

Exposure X2 Portraiture

The most advanced RAW editor and organizer just got better! Introducing Exposure X2.

Exposure X2

We’re pleased to announce the release of Exposure X2!

Exposure X2 is the follow-up to last year’s award-winning Exposure X. It’s the next step in creating the best non-destructive RAW editor and organizer available. And it continues Exposure’s tradition of inspiring your creativity and helping you work efficiently.

A vast library of creative presets provides a variety of gorgeous looks. You can apply each preset unmodified, or customize them with creative editing tools to forge your own unique style.

Master your workflow using Exposure’s many organizing tools. Its streamlined approach eliminates unnecessary complexities like catalogs and imports, while a variety of filtering and selection tools help you cull and organize your images.

Exposure X2 introduces many significant new features, including several popular requests from Exposure users:

 • Spot Healing. Easily fix blemishes and other imperfections, without having to open additional apps to complete your retouching. You can heal (i.e., skin healing in portraits) and clone (great for removing distracting elements in landscapes).
 • Faded Presets. Impart a hazy, dreamy effect to your photos, with lifted blacks, tone curve variation, split toning, and color casts. As with all our presets, they are completely customizable.
 • History Panel. Track every creative edit that you make, right down to the exact value of each slider. It’s a handy way of revisiting edits made during a lengthy session.
 • Metadata Search. Quickly search and sort your library using a variety of criteria, such as ISO, camera or lens type, shutter speed, f-stop, and many more.

We’ve also updated the Exposure Bundle, so that Exposure X2 is the centerpiece. The bundle integrates all of our award-winning photo apps: Exposure, Snap Art, and Blow Up.

Snap Art natural media effects enable you to easily transform your photos into gorgeous, handcrafted paintings in the style of oil paints, watercolors, and more. Blow Up image enlargement technology lets you enlarge your photos while keeping them crystal clear. The Exposure X2 Bundle offers considerable savings of almost 60%.

As always, our apps are flexible enough to also work as creative editing plug-ins with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

I’m always happy to talk about how hard the team at Alien Skin Software is working to improve our products. It’s exciting to see everyone burning the midnight oil to make Exposure X2 the best version yet!

While the development team is busily pounding away at their keyboards to make improvements to Exposure, I’ll toot their proverbial horns and show off another slick new feature in the upcoming Exposure X2.

This sneak peek video shows off some of the new presets added to Exposure’s expansive library of looks. We’re calling them faded presets. They are great choices if you’re looking for a simple, faded look without additional elements. They emphasize a clean, faded look without using overlays or heavy grain. Common themes across all 18 of these new presets are tone curve variation, split toning and color casts, and subtle sharpening and blur effects. Lifted blacks in these presets give a hazy or dreamy effect to your images. Watch the video to see what to expect!

Now you can quickly remove distracting elements, such as skin blemishes for photo retouching, without having to switch to another app. Like everything else about Exposure, the Spot Heal tool is fast.
