A major update to Exposure X3 is coming next month. This video shows you many of the new enhancements included in the Complete Workflow Update, so take a look to learn what’s new. This update is free for all owners of Exposure X3.
HSL Tools
Among the most exciting enhancements are new HSL tools that will enable you to adjust the hue, luminance, and saturation for each color. In addition, you’ll be able to target specific colors in your image for detailed adjustments using Exposure’s new targeted adjustment tool.
Color Temperature
If you’re editing RAW images that record white balance data, you’ll also be able to specify precise Kelvin values to correct for lighting conditions and unwanted color casts.
Printing
Printing is another new addition in this update. You’ll be able to print your photos directly from Exposure. You can apply watermarks and print a grid of images as a contact sheet. Additional settings and an image preview window make it easy to adjust your print parameters exactly as you want them.
And More
Watch the video to learn more about these and the other enhancements, and keep an eye out for our release announcement next month.
Is this a free update?
The update is free to all owners of Exposure X3.
Do something against the super flat fuji raw files, and I’m done with lightroom once and for all.
Exposure is getting better and better.
Best regards
Are you asking for improvements to Exposure’s raw conversion of Fuji files? What changes would you like to see?
Thanks, I’m in contact with Jimmy via e-mail.
Thanks for commenting, Flo. Exposure’s camera profiles are calibrated to be as neutral as possible to give the most accurate simulations when used with our presets. Most Fuji shooters say that they really like Exposure’s rendering.
It may sound a silly question, because I have no idea if the settings are compatible, but will there be one day an option to import my presets from other softwares (.lrtemplate, .xmp, .costylepack …) and add to user presets inside Exposure?
Hi Henrik, thanks for commenting. It’s not a silly question at all. Effect presets written for Lightroom are proprietary to that program. Unfortunately they will not work in Exposure. The two programs have some different parameters and rendering algorithms so adjustments made in one program won’t necessarily give the same look in another.
Thanks for the updates. I have tried the previous iterations of Exposure and found such to be excellent. However, my Leica Vario’s RAW files are not supported and evidently a “generic” DNG profile is used when developing the RAW files from the Vario.
Finley and Jimmy Would you consider profiling the Vario so that I can use Exposure as my RAW developer?
Hi Elliot, thanks for your comments. Yes, we are always working on adding support of new camera models. Would you be interested in submitting some RAW images from your Leica Vario for us to use for internal testing and evaluation?
Absolutely….contact me privately and we can accomplish what is needed! I can easily send you a few RAW images.
Great to see the new color tools have been waiting for that. But I still do not see a purple fringing tool? shooting wide open a lot i need this all the time on just about every session we shoot. Will that be out soon? Or is it out now and I missed it
I would like to give this another test run now after the new features are out.
We have around another month or so till we start getting busy for the year.
Thanks
Thanks for commenting, Edward. Exposure X3 does not yet have chromatic aberration correction. We’re actively working on this feature and are seeking example images that show significant chromatic aberration. We’ve gathered some samples, but are looking for more real world samples from our users for internal testing and evaluation. Would you be interested in submitting some photos for this purpose?
I’ve got some I can send. This is the only thing holding me back from ditching Lightroom for good.
Great! Thanks, Rick. Could you please open a support ticket about it? Then we can discuss more details about what we need and how we can receive the files from you.
Will there be a straightening or upright tool implemented into exposure x3? Or is there one there already?
Thanks for commenting, Mitchell. Straightening is already present in the product. You can simply click the level tool while cropping to use it.
A perspective correction feature isn’t available yet in Exposure. It is on our roadmap though. I’ve added your interest to the feature request log.
I forget Jimmy…will the new version have layers capability?
Hi Elliot – Layers were introduced back in Exposure X2. Check out our Nondestructive Layers video to see how easy they are to use.
Great update, I’m happy for the new HSL tools!
When you will add profiles correction for the Mitakon lenses?
Thanks for commenting, Chris. Exposure already supports some Mitakon lenses, but there are lots of them to choose from. We are actively working on adding support for more Mitakon lens models and are seeking example images. Would you be interested in submitting some photos for this purpose?
I haven’t yet a Mitakon Lens but I will buy soon a Mitakon 35mm F0.95 ver. II and I can’t find a correction profile for this lens in Exposure.
Oh yes, I’ve heard lots of good things about that lens. When you purchase one, would you share some images with us to use for testing? A selection of example images is what we need before we can build support for it into Exposure.
Oh yes! How can I share with you the images?
Awesome. I’ll send you an email about it.
Looking forward to the update with excitement for some of the workflow increases. Are you all looking at perhaps making Fujifilm simulations in the preset’s ? Luminosity Mask are also so terrific and hope that it is on the list to come soon. Still longing for a project thumbnail’s view option when looking at your collections or projects as a whole, sort of the way it was in Aperture.. such an invaluble feature that helped me to sometimes go back into a folder for editing inspiration, because I could see a thumbnail as an album cover hint that gave me a better memory of that day. Instead of just seeing your hierarchy of folders in the tree, after you get deep into a few months of shooting.. those folders all look alike . If not on the table, can you show your devs this? (fingers crossed). It sounds so subtle and simple, but just try this view in Aperture on multiple folders and you’ll right away see how X3 would rock with this option.
Thanks for the comments. There are a number of film simulation presets in Exposure already, which includes selections from Fujifilm. Support of Fujifilm’s camera profiles is something that we have on our radar. I’ve added your interest to our feature request log.
Luminosity masking and adding a thumbnail image to a folder or collection icon are features we’ve heard requests for before. I will make notes about these features for the design team to consider when they’re planning the next version of Exposure.
I’d love to see support for LUTs. They have become indispensable to my workflow. It would be nice if i didn’t have to go back to Photoshop after editing in Exposure.
Thanks for commenting, Russell. LUT support is something that’s on our radar for a future version of Exposure. I’ll add your interest about this feature in our request log.
Count me in, I really like to use LUT’s!
Thanks for commenting, Jos. LUT support is on our radar for a future version of Exposure. I’ll add a comment about your interest in that feature in our request log.
All my photos became “Invalid file”.
Will it be fixed by the coming update?
Hi Frank! Let’s get you in touch with our support team. If all your photos are giving you that message, something is not working correctly. Here is a link to open a ticket.
It would nice to be able to alter the brightness of a vignetted area within the vignette panel.
Thanks for commenting, Bob. Instead of using the Vignette panel to create the effect you describe, have you tried using Exposure’s layers with gradient masks? That would enable you to have more control over the behavior of the vignetted area, such as adjusting the image brightness. Our Local Adjustments video demonstrates how.
Very happy to continue to support this local company that produces an ever-improving product while maintaining great customer service. Look forward to the update.
Thanks so much, Fred!
Great to see these valuable updates! – HSL color adjustment is great news, please add me to the request list for perspective (transform) correction and image stacking (different images on each layer). Also, anything that can be done to accelerate raw rendering when zooming in/out. Regardless, I like x3 so much I’ve migrated from LR – please keep the great tutorial videos coming!
Thanks for the comment and the suggestions, Ollie. I’ve added notes for the design team regarding your interest in the features you mentioned.
Hi, I am doing a lot of architectural shooting. Is there any chance that there is going to be a transform tool available in X3 soon to make vertical and horizontal corrections? Thank you for your time.
Thanks for commenting, Hans. Perspective correction tools are definitely on our list of features to add to a future version of Exposure. I will make a note in our feature request log about your interest in it. That will get the design team’s attention when they’re planning the next version of Exposure.
Thanks Jimmy for bringing it to the attention of de design team. I’d like you to know that I am very impressed with the overall effectiveness of Exposure X3.
That’s great to hear, Hans. Thanks for sharing!
The new update looks great. It is nice to see that you are actively developing the software and keeping the focus on photography (instead of trying to encompass video features too).
Thanks for the comments, Ryan!
I really looking forward to the print module and I hope I can finally jump ship from Lr if it supports output sharpening and rendering intent. Exposure X3 is the best Lr alternative given my workflow but I still miss better control printing to file. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for commenting, Robert. Output sharpening will be included in the Exposure X3 Complete Workflow update. A render intent feature is on our radar for future improvements. I’ve added your interest to our feature request log.
Hi, I was wondering when the new features will be issued as it seems like a really useful upgrade on the current software. p.s Thanks for effort.
Thanks for commenting, Adam. The Exposure X3 Complete Workflow update will be available soon. Watch this space for our big announcement.
Will the new print module include the ability to import ICC profiles? The two photo labs I deal with have different ICC profiles and when I’m editing for print, I need to use the appropriate profile.
Thanks for commenting, Russell. No, that won’t be in the Exposure Complete Workflow update. User-configurable print color management is something that’s on our list of features to add in a future version. I will make a note about your interest in our feature request log.
Can I add my voice asking for perspective correction? It seems such a glaring omission. Having said that, I’m looking forward to all these new things, especially HSL!
Hi Phil, thanks for the comment. Perspective correction isn’t going to make the Exposure X3 Complete Workflow update. Its something we have on our list of features to add in a future version of Exposure. I will make sure the design team here’s about your interest in that feature.
I hope you also make some improvments on speed and performance, especially to the edit panels.
Making adjustments by using the controls, there is always a lag of approx. 1/2 seconds until applied to the image
(even when using small JPEGS only).
Looking forward to upcoming updates :)
Thanks for commenting, Michel. That is not typical behavior for Exposure. Let’s get you in contact with our support team to figure out the cause of the issues you’re experiencing. Here is a link to open a ticket.
Great news! The missing HSL tools prevented me from switching from LR to ASE, but now I will make that move. Keep up the good work!!! Just a few things you might want to consider in future updates:
– Improved highlight and shadow recovery
– A tool to remove chromatic abberation
– Edge aware brush
– Luminosity mask
– Support for the Ricoh GR / GR II. I understand that currently a generic dng profile is applied.
– Speed and performance improvements on rendering edits
– Support for further Fuji lenses such as the XF 16-55.
I am looking forward to the complete workflow update
Hi Michael, thanks for the comments. Many of the suggestions you made are already on our list of features to consider adding in a future version of Exposure. I’ve added comments for the design team about your interest in them.
While the Ricoh GR/GRII models aren’t expressly supported they should work with Exposure. Are you able to add your files to Exposure?
Exposure supports the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm 2.8 R LM RR. What other lens models are you interested in?
Hi Jimmy! There is no Fujinon 16-55 in the list of supported lenses https://www.alienskin.com/exposure/supported-lenses/
Hi Vadim – Just because a lens model isn’t listed on the website, that doesn’t mean it won’t work with Exposure. We only list the models that our team has officially put through our rigorous testing procedures.
Does the print module allow me to use paper/printer profiles? I don’t see it anywhere.
Hi Eric, thanks for commenting. Paper and printer profile support is not in the new print module. User-configurable print color management is something that’s on our list of features to add in a future version. I will make a note about your interest in our feature request log.
Yes, please. +1 for profiles.
Thanks for the comment, Fred. I’ll make a note of it for the design team.
I want to move from lightroom when my yearly subscription finishes, I’ve been looking around and Alien Skin Exposure looks very promising, your latest updates are very encouraging I’m just a bit worried about shadow recovery compared to Adobe camera raw as I’ll be using the product as a standalone
Thanks for commenting. I think the best thing to do is give the demo version a try. That will give you the opportunity to test out Exposure and see how it works for you. And it’s free! Here’s a link.
Weighing in on X3’s handling of Fuji Raw files:
I am a long-time fine art Fuji photographer (since the early camera editions and now primarily with the xPro2 and x100F). I’m a big fan of Fujifilm cameras and their sensors, but Raw conversion has always been a hot topic. My move to Alien Skin’s Exposure products was predicated on their treatment of these files.
I’m finding that X3 beats, hands-down, the likes of Capture One and other more dedicated Fuji Raw converters. In my experience it beats Lightroom most of the time or is at least equivalent to it.
Thanks for the comments, Steve!
I am about to pull the trigger to purchase X3,
3 key items determine my action to purchase:
a. Image Stacking allowing different RAW files for different layers, this is key for astrophotography fans
b. chromatic aberration correction
c. De-haze slider rather having to go through various HSL will be great to help in the workflow productivity
Will there be another updates to incorporate suggestions made with 6 months to go in 2018 or Alienskin is looking at putting in new version, then I will be paying again in 6 months time, if so I will sit out the purchase and wait for X4
Thanks for the comments, Francis. We have heard requests for the features you mentioned before, so they are already on our radar to consider adding in a future version of Exposure. I will add notes about your interest in them to our request logs, which will bring them to the design team’s attention.
We haven’t announced our plans for what new features you can expect to see in the next version of Exposure. When we make the announcement, it will be here on the blog, so this is the best place to keep up with the latest news from us.
