bio

Josh Carter is a graphic designer and software architect from Boulder, Colorado. Josh's design work includes photography, interactive application graphics, print design, and mobile phone themes. In the examples below, he uses Bokeh in conjunction with Exposure 2. On Josh’s web site you can also see a tutorial that heavily uses our Eye Candy filters and a review of the first version of Exposure. joshcarter.com

Geese
Exposure 2 was applied with the Velvia 100 setting to boost color saturation and contrast. Then I masked the foreground geese and applied Bokeh with a combination of the mask and planar focus region to blur the background while preserving the 3 geese in the foreground. The result significantly reduces background clutter. (rollover image to view original)

Pelicans
The original photo (rollover image to view original) had decent foreground subjects but the background was much too cluttered to make it useful. I started by applying the Velvia 100 setting of Exposure 2. I masked the pelicans and pier, then applied Bokeh at 25% with a planar focus region to blur the background without completely blurring the water. On another layer I masked the pier, minus the foreground pelicans, and applied a light Bokeh. Then I used a layer mask to make this light bokeh give some depth of field to the pier. The result is a nicely simulated depth of field. More details about how I did this can be found in my Pelicans Tutorial.

Tony Johnson
This used a combination of Bokeh and Exposure 2. The Bokeh settings used a radial focus region and natural vignette to focus the viewer's eye on the subject. In Exposure 2 I started with the Kodak TRI-X 400 black and white setting, then changed the color response to emphasize the red channel, with an end goal of creating more contrast between the subject and the brick wall background. If using any grain in Exposure 2, I always run Exposure after Bokeh so the grain doesn't blur. (rollover image to view original)

Violin
This is another combination of Bokeh and Exposure 2. The Bokeh settings used a radial Bokeh focus region and radial vignette. Afterward, I used Exposure 2 to convert to black and white and add grain. (rollover image to view original)
